Fine Needle Aspiration
The Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy (FNA) is an investigative procedure usually used to examine shallow lumps or masses. This technique uses a thin, hollow needle which is inserted into the mass in order to remove cells that will be examined by a pathologist. Fine needle aspiration biopsies are very safe, minor surgical procedures. Frequently, a major surgical biopsy can be avoided by performing a fine needle aspiration instead. A FNA biopsy is safer and less disturbing than an open surgical biopsy, and major complications are typically rare, depending on the specific location. The general complications include bruising and tenderness.
